Stone bed installation

Purpose:

In landscaping, stone beds are unintuitively very multipurpose. River rock beds are great for a very low maintenance garden scape. Unlike mulch and bark materials, a stone bed won't need fresh material every year. Stone beds can be great for soil moisture retention, while allowing excess water to flow right through on its way to your communities water ways. Being a "non-organic" material, stone beds are great for long term resistance to weeds by keeping the seeds from the soil, and providing a difficult barrier for weed root systems that are inevitably left behind from previous years of weeding. Stone beds, regardless of the type of stone selected, can add a pop of color, and complete your properties aesthetic, giving your property a long lasting effect to accent your outdoor living experience.

The SpringDyke Landscape LLC, professional recommendation for a fast and affordable stone bed installation is our 1-2" river rock as shown in the image. With SpringDyke Landscape LLC's access to anything you can find on the net, the choice of aggregate(stone) is yours, but with our 1-2" river rock, your beds get a splash of speckled color, clean edges, and an easy to manage material that can allow for future adjustments.

When installing a new bed, or when refreshing an old one, we recommend our 4" aluminum edging to keep beds and lawn separate, and keeping stones contained. Our aluminum edging comes in base silver(our favorite), black, brown, and a forest green.

Here at SpringDyke Landscape LLC, when installing a stone bed, we personally do not recommend installing weed mat. Weed mat is a polymer material meant to block weeds from accessing the soil below, further deterring unwanted growth, and reducing yearly maintenance. As with any material, we've found that weed mat can also reduce the rate of flow of water to the roots of the plants a customer does want. Weed mat can also reduce the amount of absorbed fertilizers and nutrients that may be added in the future. with reduced pass through caused by the material, nutrients, and water alike will follow the path of least resistance(the holes cut for your plants) resulting in root balling and crowding, and depending on grade, can result in malnurished garden plants, or on the opposite end, nutrient locked or root rotted garden plants.

Weed mat for your stone bed installation project is available upon request. We recommend against it though, given the information above.
